When I was trying to get my menstrual cycle back after several years of taking the Depo Provera contraceptive shot, I read the book 'The Period Repair Manual' by Dr. Lara Briden, N.D. Vitex is one of the supplements she suggested in the book for a wide range of menstrual difficulties. When I take it, my cycles are more regular and I am in a better mood. The liquid extract is the most effective form. I take 20 drops under my tongue in the morning before breakfast, as recommended by my own naturopathic doctor from about day 5 of my cycle until I start to menstruate again, when I then take a break for 5 days. This helps it be more effective over a longer period of time.

I use this supplement due to my nutritional therapist recommendation. I had been taking birth control hormones for at least 7 years because since teenage-hood my period was bad. Before taking this liquid vitex (if you have problems with the gastrointestinal tract, liquid is better absorbed than pills, but ask your doctor!) my menstrual cycle was up to 50 days, and now while I'm taking vitex last 2 months — it's 35 days! This is one of the most amazing herbs I have ever used. I experienced severe daily PMS like symptoms entering perimenopause and tried vitex. The PMS subsided completely (within 3-5 days of starting vitex), I mean completely gone. It was nothing short of miraculous for me as the debilitating symptoms were happening daily not just prior to menstruation. The other benefit was reducing the intensity and frequency of hormonal migraine I had experienced since puberty. I had previously required prescription pain relief to manage the worst days. After starting vitex I was able to use just a single paracetamol and ibuprofen to reduce the pain. Secondly, 3-5 migraines a month were reduced to 1-2 migraines a month. This is a life changing reduction. I highly recommend Vitex for anyone experiencing hormonal symptoms - I was estrogen dominant and highly sensitive to estrogen fluctuations, however please remember it also benefits fertility.
